( 44 ) animate you with the desire to attempt wild speculations. In delineating the careers of Gutenberg and Columbus, and giving you a summary of the colossal results which have followed from their work, I am, in the first place, only anxious to show that desultory remarks and discourses may lead to profitable studies; and, in the second, to lay before you the great lessons taught by the labours, trials, and triumphs of some of the master minds of history. At any rate, let me express the hope that my attempt to interest you has not failed, and that it may meet with a generous indulgence and approval. AYLESBURY, Vicrorta Crus ror Workine Men, 13th October, 1887.
