As Charles sped along to Paris he convinced himself of the fact that, though the crown of Eng- land was the object of his ambition, his strength lay in Scotland, where, the instant he landed, the ancient adherents of his race would flock around his standard and prove the truth of the proverb: ‘He that would England win _ Must with Scotland first begin.’ On his arrival in Paris Charles found the French ready to use him as a convenient tool, but unwilling to engage for his sake in an open war with England. The French fleet on which he embarked withdrew before an English squadron, and was scattered by a storm. Charles then had to rely on his own slender resources. It was not until the 8th of July, 1745, that having been able to fit out two small vessels, the Doutelle and the Elizabeth, accompanied by seven Scotch friends, disguised as a student and calling himself Mr. Smith, he set sail for Scotland on his in- tended invasion of England. The Elizabeth met an English man-of-war and was forced to put back, but the Doutelle carried the young prince safely over the sea and landed him on a remote island of the
